How to guide: Plant Mounts
Shelves are full, the floor is a jungle—what now? Time to take things up a notch with mounted plants!
What is a Mounted Plants?
A mounted plant is a plant that’s attached to a surface like wood, cork, or driftwood instead of being potted in soil. This mimics how certain plants grow in nature, especially epiphytes like staghorn ferns, orchids, and hoyas, which naturally cling to trees and absorb moisture from the air. Mounted plants are a great way to save space, add a unique design element to your home, and create a more natural growing environment for certain species. Plus, they just look cool!
You: hmm, I just looked at the pic above and that looks complicated…
Have no fear! its much easier than it looks.
Here’s how to make your own:
Pick Your Plant: Ferns, hoyas, and orchids are the MVPs of plant mounting.
Choose a Base: Wood plaques, cork bark, or even a chunk of driftwood make great backdrops.
Squish it: Take your plant out of its pot and remove excess soil. Compress the roots into a ball and place on the cork board where you like it.
Wrap It: Encase the plant’s roots in a layer of damp moss (we like to use sheet moss for longevity). Make sure to cover all exposed soil to retain moisture and keep the soil off your walls later. 😉
Secure It: Wrap fishing line around the moss and board, crisscrossing to hold everything in place. It’s okay if the fishing line looks a little messy—what matters is that your plant is secure!
Tie it: Once your plant is secure, tie off the fishing line with a simple knot, making sure it’s tight enough to hold but not so tight that it damages the moss or plant
Water it: You did it! Before hanging up your mount water the mossy part and allow to dry.
